Which probiotics do women need?

Did you know that most of your immune system is in your gut?  That most of your neurotransmitters are in your gut?  It is crazy how much of our body gets direction from our digestive system!!

Fermented food contains lots of healthy gut bacteria and are pretty easy to find.  Some examples include sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, and umeboshi plum.  But if you aren't a fan of fermented foods, you should consider taking a daily probiotic (or do both!).

Fortunately, most people have heard the term "probiotic", thanks largely to exposure from social media and from Western Medicine being in its infancy stage of acknowledging their existence.  However, many people are not getting a high quality probiotic in their everyday lives.  For example, if it comes in a container filled with a lot of sugar, chemicals, and/or other GMO ingredients, it is probably not an ideal probiotic!

What is super important when it comes to probiotics is the diversity of strains and the quality of strains. What do I mean?  Different bacteria strains have different roles when it comes to your overall health.  So the more diverse your gut bacteria, the better apt you are to have well rounded support for your whole body! That is why it is so important to regularly change up your probiotic and to look for high quality products.  Your probiotic label should be able to specify exactly what strains it contains!

Sometimes less is more when it comes to the actual quantity in the probiotic.  It is better to have less "billion" if there is more diversity and quality of strains!  Make sure the source is a well-trusted brand that uses non-GMO ingredients and is free of allergens.

One of my favorite probiotics for women is made by Jarrow Formulas.  Women are unique and complex in that they need additional healthy bacterial support for the reproductive system.  Jarro-Dophilus Women 5 Billion is perfectly made up to provide women with additional bacterial strains that support vaginal and urinary health.  In fact, it contains four patented probiotic strains that were enumerated and screened for desirable characteristics and efficacy.  These strains were then clinically tested to document their health benefits for women's health.  This is the only multi-strain probiotic comprised solely of vaginally-derived strains vs. intestinally or non- human derived strains.  I can't stress enough how important it is to find a probiotic with these qualities, especially if you are pregnant!!

Also, when it comes to this probiotic, you can be sure that it is getting where it needs to!  It has a special enteric coating that resists stomach acid so it can get to your large intestine, where it belongs.  There, it can help you the most!  In addition, I love that this brand is allergen free, so I don't have to be worried about taking it or sharing with my family and friends. I like to take my probiotic at the end of the day before bed.

I have been taking this probiotic for the past month, and I am so grateful to continue supporting my gut health!  I do not get UTIs or yeast infections, but that doesn't mean I want them either! Prevention is key, and that is where a great probiotic comes in.  I also have liked taking this women's probiotic because probiotics have been found to be helpful in optimizing fertility.

What about you?  Are you taking a probiotic? Is it specific for women?? Make sure to check the quality of your brand and try out Jarro-Dophilus Women!  You can find it at Whole Foods, Sprouts, iherb.com, vitacost.com, amazon.com, or check out jarrowprobiotics.com for the full list of locations.

Blessings,

Lindsay
